Who

I'm Fong-Wan Chau (周风云), a physician from Chile with Chinese heritage. I completed my medical training in Latin America and currently work across medicine, writing, language, and technology.

Medicine drew me in through its combination of science, problem-solving, and human connection. Over time, I also became deeply interested in how people learn, communicate, and make sense of complex systems — whether in healthcare, education, or the internet itself.

My life has always existed between languages and cultures. I grew up speaking Spanish, learned Chinese through family, and later English through medicine, research, and online communities. That multilingual background shapes both how I think and how I write.

What This Site Is

This is a personal archive and thinking space.

I write about medicine, medical education, early childhood development, language acquisition, technology, and maintaining an independent presence on the web. The site has existed since 2014 and serves as a long-term record of evolving thoughts and projects.

Posts appear in English, Spanish, or Chinese depending on the topic and the mindset behind it. The multilingual structure is intentional — some ideas simply exist more naturally in certain languages, and translating everything into one language would flatten the thinking.

Now

(Updated May 2026)

Currently focused on the Chilean EUNACOM licensing process, clinical medicine, and building sustainable ways of learning and working in an increasingly fragmented digital world.

I remain especially interested in evidence-based learning, active recall, spaced repetition, cognitive ergonomics, and how physicians can study more effectively without sacrificing depth or humanity.

Outside medicine, I spend time exploring the IndieWeb, ActivityPub, decentralized social protocols, and long-term digital ownership. This site is part of that exploration: a small attempt to build a quieter, slower, and more durable corner of the internet.

I’m also interested in minimalist software design, self-hosted systems, and technologies that prioritize longevity over engagement metrics.

Colophon

This site runs on hand-written PHP with minimal dependencies. The design prioritizes readability, speed, and longevity over trends.

No analytics, no tracking cookies, no third-party scripts on initial page load. Content is written in Markdown and version-controlled.

I believe in the open web: HTML that lasts decades, URLs that don't break, RSS that can't be algorithmically throttled. This site is an exercise in building something that might still work in 2040.

Stack: PHP, PostgreSQL, Parsedown, minimal CSS, system fonts.
